Applied ICT is a course designed to allow you to study and critically analyse the uses to which ICT is being put in the 21st Century. You will identify and evaluate a number of different uses of the internet and present your research and conclusions in an e-book.
They will analyse a commercial, transactional website looking at how the company deals with customers and protects their valuable data. They will study in depth the uses and techniques required for a company to organise it’s data to become more effective or efficient and hence more profitable. At A2 students undertake a large Multimedia project designed for a particular end user. Some examples in the past have been for businesses or for teachers in the school to use with classes.

What do I need to know or be able to do before taking this course?
This course is an ICT course therefore the main requirement is that you have an interest in developing the knowledge and skills you need to be a competent and informed ICT user and practitioner.
After that you need to have:
· any five GCSEs at grade A*-C
· any other level 2 qualifications such as GCSE (Double Award) in Applied ICT at grades AA-CC or Intermediate GNVQ in ICT;
If you do not have the above qualifications you might still be able to take the course, we would discuss this in September when you start.

Is the qualification structured like other GCEs?
Yes, the qualification has an AS/A2 structure.
AS is short for Advanced Subsidiary. This is the first half of the Advanced GCE course and is made up of 3 modules. It is a stepping stone to the full Advanced GCE qualification. You can take the AS on its own if you wish. You can also decide at the end of the AS course to continue with the course and take the A2 units for the full Advanced GCE qualification.

What kind of student is this course suitable for?
You will enjoy this course if you would like to:
· be able to select and use appropriate ICT tools and techniques to help you carry out investigations; capture and handle data; solve problems; make decisions; present and communicate information
· increase your awareness of the benefits and drawbacks of ICT and its impact on the way people live their lives
· learn how to plan and manage projects and work effectively with others

How will I be assessed?
The assessment is very ICT based and does not have a written examination as such.
Units 1 and 2 are assessed based on an ePortfolio you will create. This is designed to be viewed on screen and will showcase your achievements. This is effectively a website that your teacher will mark and will be moderated by the examinations board – EdExcel.
You will be assessed in Units 3 by an assignment set by EdExcel that ask you to carry out practical, 'hands-on' tasks under examination conditions.

What could I go on to do at the end of my course?
The GCE in Applied ICT qualifies for UCAS points so if you complete it successfully you could move on to study for a degree or BTEC Higher National Diploma in related subjects such as ICT, Computer Science, Information Systems, Multimedia, Software Engineering, Computer Networking, e-Business and Information Management. You could also go on to work based training such as IT User/Practitioner NVQs or vendor-specific qualifications.

What will I learn about on this course?
The AS units focus on developing your communications and decision - making skills. It is split into 3 modules in the same way as all other AS level courses.

Unit 1 - The Information Age
We are living in an age in which an enormous amount of information is produced, communicated and stored in digital format every day.
In this unit you will learn about the information communication technologies that enable people to access and exchange information and to carry out transactions anytime, anywhere.
You will take a critical look at the impact that the internet has had on the way people conduct their personal and professional lives, explore the services it offers and gain ‘hands-on’ experience of using some of them.
As you will discover, the internet provides fantastic opportunities to those individuals and communities who are ‘technology enabled’. However, for one reason or another, not everyone is able to take full advantage of what is on offer. You will investigate the causes and effects of the digital divide which separates the ‘haves’ from the ‘have nots’ and evaluate measures being taken to bridge the gap.

Throughout the unit you will acquire the tools and techniques you need to make effective use of the information available to you on the internet.

The skills and knowledge you gain whilst studying this unit will be a useful foundation for the rest of the qualification.
This is a user-focused unit. The knowledge and skills developed in this unit are particularly relevant to those who use ICT on a daily basis at work or at school/college for personal, social and work-related purposes.

Unit 2— The Digital Economy
In a world dominated by the global e-marketplace websites are the interface between customers and organisations, allowing them to do business with one another anytime, anywhere. Enhanced connectivity underpins the growth of the digital economy. The increase in internet-enabled computers in the home and the use of credit cards to pay for goods are major factors in its evolution.

Consumers exercise greater autonomy and have more choice than is available to them offline in their own locality. They expect to receive a personalised service and an instant response.
In this unit, you will investigate how organisations are responding to the pressures of the e-marketplace by using transactional websites to:

  • present their products and services
  • gather information
  • provide a personalised service.

As an informed ICT user, you need to be aware of the methods used by organisations to persuade their customers to reveal personal information about themselves and what it is used for.
Security and privacy are two key concerns for organisations and individuals operating in the digital economy. You will assess potential threats to customer data and evaluate the effectiveness of current legislation and measures taken by organisations to protect data.

Databases are key to managing the large amount of data that organisations collect. You will learn how to use database software to analyse data and identify trends and patterns.
Your work for this unit will be an in-depth investigation into the design of a commercial transactional website and the back-office processes involved in handling an online purchase.
This is a user-focused unit. The knowledge and skills developed in this unit are particularly relevant to those who use ICT on a daily basis at work or at school/college for personal, social and work-related purposes.

Unit 3—The Knowledge Worker
We all encounter situations where we have to weigh up alternatives and make decisions. For example, if you organise a school disco, you need to work out how much you should charge for tickets – enough to cover the cost of the event, but not so much that it puts people off coming. When choosing a university or college, you need to take factors such as fees, travelling costs and accommodation into account as well as the courses that are available and the entrance requirements. You may have a personal preference for a particular course, but other factors may lead you choose another.

In this Information Age computers and communications technology provide many of us with access to vast quantities of information. As ICT users, we need to make judgements about sources and accuracy of information and be able to select and manipulate information to support sound decision making.

In this unit you will learn about making informed decisions using the knowledge available to you. As you already know, not all information is current or accurate. You will learn how to select your sources and decide on how much credence you can place in them. You will learn that there are often many factors to consider when making a decision and that part of the process is to identify gaps in your knowledge.

In this unit, you will develop your skills as a knowledge worker by learning how to use spreadsheet models to investigate alternatives and answer ‘what-if’ questions. The formulae in these models will allow you to try out some of the possible alternatives that you have identified. Together with information from other sources, you will use the outcome of the models to inform your decision making.
